Gordon MacDonald was born and raised in New Brunswick and Newfoundland. He left the Maritimes to study at the Toronto School of Art, The Ontario College of Art, and The Art Students League in New York.
I returned to the Maritimes in 1999. After years of doing figurative work, I realized that the landscape of Atlantic Canada had a much larger impact on me than I thought. I still do portraits occasionally but for the most part I?m concerned with recreating my early response to the landscape. I paint mostly from my imagination, rather than any specific place, which allows a lot of freedom to recreate the mood and character of my surroundings. I will continue to live in Nova Scotia and I hope to travel at least one month a year.
